Early battles were fought in WV.
WV state was forged in the Civil War. WV broke away from Virginia, April 17, 1861 because the state did
not want to secede from the Union.
West Virginia was important to both the Confederates and the Union
because the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, a vital supply line, ran through
the state
The battle of Laurel Hill was fought on July 7-11, 1861
near the town of Belington. The battle is re-enacted annually.
October 2009 is the 150th anniversary of John
Brown’s raid on the arsenal at Harpers Ferry. Events are planned to commemorate
the raid.
